For a long time, I convinced myself that the way I felt was just part of being an adult, a teacher, a mom, and someone carrying too much responsibility all the time. I thought exhaustion was normal. I thought feeling uncomfortable in my own skin was something I simply had to accept as I got older. I assumed the swollen ankles, lack of energy, inflammation, brain fog, and constant frustration with my body were just part of life.

So I kept trying harder.

I tried eating better. I tried cutting things out. I tried working out more consistently. I tried motivating myself with guilt, discipline, and sheer willpower. Every time something didn’t work, I blamed myself for not sticking with it well enough.

Meanwhile, I was showing up every day for everyone else.

My students still got the best version of me I could give them. My family still relied on me. From the outside, I probably looked completely fine.

But internally, I felt disconnected from myself in a way that’s difficult to explain unless you’ve experienced it too.

The hardest part wasn’t even the weight itself. It was the feeling that I had lost access to who I actually was.

Deep down, I knew there was a version of me that still existed somewhere underneath the exhaustion and frustration. I remembered being more energetic, more confident, more patient, and more present. I remembered feeling comfortable in my own body instead of constantly trying to hide it behind oversized clothes and baggy cardigans in a freezing classroom.

And honestly, I think a lot of teachers understand this feeling more than we admit.

Teaching requires an enormous amount of emotional energy. We spend our days pouring into other people while ignoring our own needs for months, or years, at a time. We normalize stress and burnout because everyone around us is stressed and burned out too. We joke about surviving on caffeine and functioning on empty because it feels easier than admitting how deeply depleted we actually are.

Eventually, I stopped asking myself why I felt so bad and started assuming this was simply who I had become.

That mindset began to change when I finally stopped focusing only on “trying harder” and started learning about what was actually happening in my body. For the first time, I considered that maybe this wasn’t just a motivation problem or a discipline problem. Maybe there were legitimate metabolic, hormonal, inflammatory, and health-related reasons why I felt stuck no matter how hard I worked.

That shift changed everything for me.

Not overnight, and not in some unrealistic, magical way. But slowly, I started feeling more like myself again. I had more energy. My body felt better. I stopped obsessing over hiding myself. I felt more present in my own life instead of feeling like I was just surviving it.

Ironically, the biggest transformation wasn’t physical. The biggest transformation was emotional. I stopped mourning the version of myself I thought I had lost. I started recognizing her again.

I’m sharing this because I know there are so many women, especially teachers, who are quietly carrying these same feelings while continuing to function at a high level every single day. So many women who look “fine” from the outside but internally feel exhausted, uncomfortable, inflamed, discouraged, and disconnected from themselves.

If that’s you, I hope you know this:

You are not lazy.
You are not failing.
And you probably do not need more shame, more pressure, or more punishment.

Sometimes you simply need different support, better information, and a willingness to stop blaming yourself for struggling.

Interactive math notebooks have been a staple in my classroom for years. While I personally prefer composition notebooks, this exact system can be used with binders, spirals, folders, or pretty much any notebooking format. The organization matters far more than the type of notebook you choose.

One thing I think gets lost in a lot of interactive notebook discussions is the purpose of the notebook itself. My goal has never been to create Pinterest-worthy notebooks or scrapbook pages. My goal is to create a resource students will actually use. I always start with these templates.

I want students to have a place to find examples, vocabulary, formulas, graphic organizers, and reference materials before raising their hand and asking me for help. If a student can answer their own question by opening their notebook, then the notebook is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Student Cover Page

The first page of every notebook is a cover page. Is it necessary? Not really. Do students enjoy personalizing it and making it their own? Absolutely.

The cover gives students ownership from the very beginning. They color it, add their names, and create something that is uniquely theirs. Since they’re going to be using this notebook all year long, I don’t mind spending a little time helping them make it their own.

The State Reference Sheet

One of the first things we glue into our notebooks is our state math reference sheet. I print it on colored paper and have students glue it to the inside front cover. This is one of the most valuable pages in the entire notebook.

Students are allowed to use this reference sheet on classroom assessments throughout the year. My reasoning is pretty simple: if students are allowed to use it on the FAST assessment, why wouldn’t I allow them to use it in my classroom? I’d much rather teach students how to use reference materials effectively than pretend they’ll never have access to them. Learning where to find information is just as important as memorizing information.

Goals, Expectations, and Ownership

Next, students glue in our notebook expectations and class goals. This isn’t a list of rules as much as it is a conversation about responsibility. From day one, I make it very clear that the notebook belongs to them, not me.

That probably leads to my most unpopular interactive notebook opinion…

I Don’t Grade Interactive Notebooks

I know notebook checks are common. I know some teachers collect notebooks regularly and assign grades for organization, completeness, or neatness.

I don’t.

In my classroom, the notebook is a tool, not an assignment. Students know from the beginning that if they choose not to take notes, copy examples, or keep their notebook organized, they aren’t hurting me. They’re hurting themselves.

One of the easiest ways to teach students the value of their notes is through open-note quizzes. Students who have complete notes, examples, and reference materials quickly realize how helpful those resources can be. Students who don’t? They learn that lesson pretty quickly too.

I’d rather students maintain their notebooks because they understand the value than because they’re afraid of losing points.

The goal isn’t notebook compliance. The goal is independence.

A Color-Coded Table of Contents

Organization is everything when it comes to interactive notebooks. I use a color-coded table of contents with tabs printed on colored cardstock. Each major unit or timeframe receives its own color.

This makes classroom conversations incredibly simple. Instead of saying, “Turn to Unit 4,” I can say, “Look in your yellow section.”

Students find information faster. Transitions are smoother. And when students need to reference something months later, they can locate it quickly without flipping through an entire notebook. It’s one of the simplest things I do, but it makes a huge difference.

Guided Notes, Graphic Organizers, and Examples

The majority of our notebooks consist of guided notes, graphic organizers, vocabulary pages, reference sheets, fold and flip notes, and teacher examples. Occasionally students take notes by hand, but most content is glued into the notebook.

Another philosophy that surprises some teachers is that we do not complete independent practice inside our notebooks. Ever.

The notebook is reserved for teacher-provided content and correct examples only.

I want every page in that notebook to be something students can trust and reference later. When students open their notebook, they should find accurate information, complete examples, and organized notes. They shouldn’t have to sort through half-finished practice problems or incorrect work to find what they’re looking for.

Because of that, students are expected to copy my examples exactly. If I’m modeling a problem, I want them to have a correct version of that problem available later when they need it.

The Storage Pocket

Inside the back cover, they glue a small manila envelope.

It isn’t fancy, but it works. Students use the envelope to store puzzle pieces, foldables, task card pieces, and any materials they’re actively using. Instead of papers floating around desks, backpacks, and the classroom floor, students know exactly where to keep them.

It’s a simple solution that saves a surprising amount of frustration throughout the year.

The Password Page

The last page of the notebook is reserved for passwords.

Every year, without fail, students forget passwords.

Rather than answering the same question repeatedly, students know exactly where to look when they need login information. It’s one of those small organizational systems that saves a lot of time over the course of a school year.

My Favorite Organization Hack

I place a strip of painter’s tape along the binding of each composition notebook. Each class receives a different color.

Students can identify the correct notebook instantly, even from across the room. It’s inexpensive, easy to replace, and works better than most labeling systems I’ve tried.

Supplies I Use

My interactive notebook setup is intentionally simple. Some of the supplies I use every year include:

Composition notebooks

Glue sticks

Student scissors

Colored cardstock

Colored painter’s tape

You don’t need a huge classroom budget to make interactive notebooks successful. All of my favorites are linked HERE.

Final Thoughts

Interactive notebooks work because they give students ownership of their learning while also providing a reliable reference tool throughout the year.

The notebook isn’t for me. It’s for them.

If a student can answer their own question by finding an example, checking a vocabulary page, or referencing a formula in their notebook, then the system is working exactly as intended.

And in my classroom, that’s always been the goal.

The first week of school can be unpredictable, stressful, fun, challenging… all the things!

This year I decided to spend my entire first week on review and group work in my 5th grade math classroom. I wanted to set the tone from the very beginning that our class would be one full of collaboration, teamwork and growth.

I jumped right into a Back to School Math Escape for days 1 and 2. We did not finish this but I didn’t expect to! It was the perfect opportunity to challenge them, get them up and moving around the classroom and working together. I informed them that I would not be providing any assistance unless they’d used the hint card provided, and used every single brain in the group. This allowed me to spend time circulating the room to learn who each student was and how they’d work together. It was also easy to see which students were taking on the role of leader and which ones seemed happy to sit back and let others do the work. This is all really good information to gather up front!

For the second two days, I turned to a Jeopardy-style review game that focused on key 4th grade skills. Students worked in groups chosen by me. Each group HAD to answer, not just the group that picked the category. Each student in each group had their own whiteboard to use. Once everyone in the group solved the problem, they had to collectively agree on one answer (this wasn’t always easy), and help figure out which mistakes were made on the boards they didn’t agree with before they could share out their answer. Everyone has the chance to earn points this way and it encourages (forces?) math discussion and teamwork. They really enjoyed both activities!

The last day was focused on prepping our interactive notebooks using these templates for the year. I know this style of notebook can be considered difficult, but I really believe in the power of keeping kids organized. Plus, in 5th grade I put a huge focus on learning how to take notes to prepare for middle school.

No matter what you do – make it engaging, relevant and focus on the thing that will for sure make or break your room this year – building relationships.

I’m working on a post about my classroom must-haves for organization and decor! Not because I wasn’t trying. But because, like a lot of educators, I’ve been stuck in a cycle of giving everything to everyone else and putting myself last.

Teaching is physically and emotionally draining. Lunch breaks are short (and rarely healthy). After school, there’s planning, grading, family life… and by the time we even think about doing something for ourselves, we’re too tired to function.

For years, I told myself I could get healthy on my own. I just needed to try harder. Move more. Eat better. Push through.

Over a year and a half ago, my doctor suggested weight loss medication. I said no. I wanted to do it “the right way.” I wasn’t ready to admit I needed help.

I Tried Everything… and Nothing Changed

On January 1st of this year, I made a commitment to everyone on Instagram: 20 minutes of exercise every single day. That felt manageable. Achievable.

And I kept my promise. For months.
But the scale didn’t budge. Not even a pound.

Eventually, I gave up. Not because I didn’t want it badly enough, but because I felt like no matter what I did, nothing would change.

So in late April, I finally said yes to the medication my doctor had mentioned.

And I’ll be honest, I didn’t start from a place of hope.
I started from a place of frustration, discouragement, and burnout.

What’s Changed Since April

Since starting a GLP-1/GIP, I’ve lost 20 pounds.

More importantly:
– I come home from school and my ankles aren’t swollen.
– I’ve gone down a pant size… probably two.
– I have energy again.
– My confidence is creeping back in.
– I feel more like myself.

And no, I haven’t been perfect. I haven’t started going to the gym five days a week or meal prepping religiously. But I finally feel like I’m making progress. I’m eating better, focusing on my water and protein intake and – I’m re-discovering my confidence. And that’s everything.

I’m not at a finish line. I’m in the middle.
But the middle is so much better than where I started.

What I’m Using & Why I’m Sharing It

I’m using a telehealth service that makes it easy to connect with a licensed provider and explore whether a GLP-1 or GIP is right for you. It is simple, personalized, judgment-free, and honestly… kind of life-changing.

If you’re curious, CLICK HERE for more information.

If You’re a Teacher Who’s Struggling…

Please hear this:

You are not lazy.
You are not a failure.
You are not alone.

So many teachers are exhausted, overwhelmed, and carrying shame around their health, not because they’re not trying, but because the system isn’t built for them to succeed. It’s built for them to give, and give, and give… until there’s nothing left.

You deserve to feel good in your body.
You deserve energy at the end of the day.
You deserve confidence. Comfort. Ease.

And you don’t have to wait for a magical break in the schedule or a “perfect time” to begin.

If my story resonates with you, I’d be honored to talk more. I don’t have all the answers, but I’m walking the path. And it’s finally starting to lead somewhere beautiful.

With love,
Lindsay

This year, I decided to try something new with my 4th and 5th grade math intervention groups: interactive notebooks. But not just any notebooks… mini ones. Why I Went Mini Let’s be honest: intervention time is short, and our students are often struggling with more than just math. Keeping things simple was the goal. So...

This year, I decided to try something new with my 4th and 5th grade math intervention groups: interactive notebooks. But not just any notebooks… mini ones.

Why I Went Mini

Let’s be honest: intervention time is short, and our students are often struggling with more than just math. Keeping things simple was the goal.

So instead of full-sized spirals or composition books, we used mini interactive notebooks. They’re cheap, they’re less intimidating for students, and they last just long enough, about one quarter to one semester. And that’s perfectly fine with me.

Ditching the Perfectionism

I didn’t stress about a detailed table of contents. We didn’t number every single page. In fact, sometimes pages were glued in upside-down, sideways, or sticking out the sides. And guess what? We survived.

For me, intervention isn’t about perfection. It’s about helping kids build independence and confidence. My students already know they’re receiving extra support. I don’t want that support to feel like a punishment.

What Went in the Notebook?

Simple visual notes

Quick practice examples

Occasionally, I asked them to show work in the notebook, but usually, we used whiteboards for solving and kept the notebook clean for correct reference examples.

This gave us a dedicated space for notes and examples that students could refer back to without the clutter or confusion of messy calculations. It also made it easier for me to check in and quickly reteach when needed.

Why It Worked

Most of my intervention students struggled with organization. So the idea of handing them a folder full of loose papers? Absolutely not. The notebook kept everything in one place: notes, strategies, examples, and visuals, without the chaos.

Plus, they could personalize their notebook covers with stickers or drawings. A little ownership and creativity goes a long way in building engagement with students who often feel left behind.

Tips if You Want to Try This

Go small. Mini notebooks are budget-friendly and just enough for a quarter or two. They’re easier to store, carry, and manage.

Don’t overdo structure. Intervention students need support, not stress. Focus on function over perfection.

Use whiteboards for real-time work. This keeps the notebooks neat and makes space for students to go back and review clean examples.

Let them decorate! It helps kids take ownership and even enjoy using their notebooks.

Using interactive notebooks in intervention has helped me streamline materials, increase student independence, and create a resource they can actually use and understand.

It’s not Pinterest-perfect, but it’s real, and it works for us.

Want to try it? Start small, skip the complicated formatting, and meet your students where they are. You might be surprised by how much ownership and confidence they build when given something that finally makes sense to them.

Want more of my thoughts on intervention and why teacher-led, hands on works better than those expensive programs? Click here to head to that blog post!

Lindsay

So… state testing is done. Your brain is screaming, “Now what?”

If you’re like most teachers, the time between testing and the last day of school can feel like no-man’s land. You’re expected to “keep teaching” but everyone’s a little burned out, your pacing guide is done(ish), and kids can practically smell summer vacation.

Here’s the good news: This stretch doesn’t have to feel like a chaotic countdown to summer. You can absolutely make these weeks meaningful, productive, and (dare I say?) even fun for you and your students.

Let’s talk about how to make that happen.

Finish the Curriculum (Yes, Really)

Before you toss the pacing guide out the window, pause. Were there any skills you had to rush through? Concepts your students clearly didn’t master? Now’s your chance to go back and clean things up.

Use anchor tasks, collaborative work, or hands-on review games to solidify those must-have skills.

But once that’s done? It’s time to shift gears.

Review or Preview: An Intentional Way End

Here’s where the magic happens.

Not every student needs the same thing in these final weeks. Some are barely hanging onto the grade level material. Others have crushed it and are mentally halfway to next year. So why treat them the same?

Instead of assigning the same activities to the whole class, try this:

➤ Group 1: Review Crew

These students showed gaps on benchmark assessments or struggled with key concepts. They need targeted review — not a generic packet or endless worksheets. Use spiral review stations, skill-based small groups, or interactive review challenges to help them rebuild confidence.

Bonus Tip: Let these students work together in pairs or triads with clear roles. Collaborative learning is powerful when guided.

➤ Group 2: Preview Pros

These students have already demonstrated mastery of most grade-level content. Give them the gift of curiosity.

Let them explore:

Real-world extensions of the content (project-based learning is gold here)

A few high-leverage standards from next year’s curriculum

Open-ended math investigations or “challenge problems”

You’re not trying to teach the next grade, just plant seeds. Get them thinking, connecting, and excited for what’s coming.

Keep It Light and Purposeful

This isn’t the time to start something massive or overwhelming. But it is the time to spark joy and remind kids that learning doesn’t stop when testing ends.

Ideas that work beautifully post-testing:

Math escape rooms (I have end of year ones that teacher LOOOOOVE)

STEM challenges

Multi-day themed reviews to hook them and keep them engaged, like these Math Mystery Reviews.

Passion projects tied to math or problem-solving

Game Choice Boards – they create them, then play them!

Math journaling with reflection prompts like:

“The hardest thing I learned this year was…”

“One math skill I’ll use in real life is…”

Final Thought

Teaching between testing and the last day of school doesn’t have to be a survival game. With smart grouping, a little structure, and a dash of creativity, you can make this time meaningful for every student.

Let them leave your room feeling confident, curious, and maybe even excited for what’s next.

Can you believe we’re already halfway through the school year?

Assessments (both mid-year and final) are looming, and while they can feel overwhelming, they don’t have to be! With the right strategies and tools, you can set your students (and yourself) up for success.

Let’s dive into some simple, effective ways to prepare for mid-year assessments while keeping the stress to a minimum.

3 Strategies for Mid-Year Assessment Prep

1. Review with Intent
When time is limited, it’s all about focusing on the essentials. Spend your review sessions targeting high-impact topics and commonly missed skills.
Example: Use warm-ups or quick daily drills to review core concepts like fractions, algebraic expressions, or geometry formulas.
Resource to Save Time: Check out my grade level stations bundles for ready-to-use activities that cover multiple topics in one go.

2. Incorporate Practice Tests
Simulate the real test environment with practice quizzes or tests. This not only builds familiarity but also reduces anxiety.
Pro Tip: Review the results together, focusing on common errors and problem-solving strategies.
Free Download: Grab my Assessment Prep Checklist to keep your prep organized and on track.

3. Use Small Group Reviews
Break your class into small groups and assign specific skills to each group based on their needs. This personalized approach can work wonders for struggling learners.
Idea: Create skill-based stations where students rotate and work on different types of problems.
Resource to save time: Check out any one of my almost 30 test prep specific resources.

Quick Tip: Make It Fun
Add a little competition to your review sessions! Try a classroom game like Jeopardy-Style PowerPoint Games or use task cards for a scavenger hunt-style activity. Students learn better when they’re having fun.

Why All of This Matters
Mid-year assessments aren’t just about grades—they’re a chance to reflect on progress and identify growth areas for the rest of the year. With intentional review and a little creativity, you can turn this into a meaningful learning experience for your students.

Wrap-Up

Test prep doesn’t have to be stressful! By focusing on what matters most, using engaging activities, and staying organized, you can help your students tackle assessments with confidence.

What’s your favorite mid-year prep strategy? Share it in the comments or DM me on Instagram here. I’d love to hear your ideas!

Keep crushing it!
Lindsay

Winter break is over, and we all know how tough it can be to get students back into the groove.

But don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! With some creative winter-themed math challenges, we can make that transition smoother and keep our students engaged and learning.

Why Winter-Themed Activities Work
Let’s face it: post-break vibes can feel sluggish. That’s why adding a little seasonal fun can reignite students’ energy and focus. Winter-themed math activities combine creativity with curriculum goals, making learning feel fresh and exciting.

3 Winter Math Challenges to Try

1. Snowflake Symmetry
This is a perfect way to incorporate geometry while having fun. Give students templates to design their own snowflakes, focusing on symmetry and patterns.

What You’ll Need:
Printable snowflake templates.
Scissors and colored paper.

Bonus Tip: Hang their creations around the classroom to double as winter decor!

2. Hot Cocoa Word Problems
Let’s make math delicious! Create real-world word problems centered around hot cocoa.

For example:
“If one packet of hot cocoa serves 3 people, how many packets are needed for 15 people?”
This activity reinforces multiplication, division, and fractions.

Optional Add-On: Bring in actual hot cocoa mix for a fun classroom treat!

3. Build a Winter Wonderland
Challenge your students to design and “budget” a winter festival. They’ll calculate area, perimeter, and costs for different booths, activities, or attractions.

What You’ll Need:
Graph paper
Printable or student design ideas for booths.

Free Resource Alert!!
Want something ready to go? Check out my FREE Snow Day Logic Puzzle. Engage your students with this no prep activity!

Why These Activities Work
They’re hands-on. Perfect for visual and kinesthetic learners.
They’re engaging. Seasonal themes make math feel less like work and more like fun.
They’re versatile. Use them for individual practice, group work, or even as a mini-project.

Make It Even Easier
Don’t have time to create all these activities from scratch? Check out my Editable Winter Coloring Page resource. Simply add in your own questions and BOOM. A winter themed activity is ready to go!

Remember…
Winter doesn’t have to mean a slow return to routines. With a little creativity and a seasonal twist, you can keep your students engaged and ready to learn.

What’s your favorite winter-themed classroom activity?
