Can you believe we’re already halfway through the school year?

Assessments (both mid-year and final) are looming, and while they can feel overwhelming, they don’t have to be! With the right strategies and tools, you can set your students (and yourself) up for success.

Let’s dive into some simple, effective ways to prepare for mid-year assessments while keeping the stress to a minimum.

3 Strategies for Mid-Year Assessment Prep

1. Review with Intent
When time is limited, it’s all about focusing on the essentials. Spend your review sessions targeting high-impact topics and commonly missed skills.
Example: Use warm-ups or quick daily drills to review core concepts like fractions, algebraic expressions, or geometry formulas.
Resource to Save Time: Check out my grade level stations bundles for ready-to-use activities that cover multiple topics in one go.

2. Incorporate Practice Tests
Simulate the real test environment with practice quizzes or tests. This not only builds familiarity but also reduces anxiety.
Pro Tip: Review the results together, focusing on common errors and problem-solving strategies.

3. Use Small Group Reviews
Break your class into small groups and assign specific skills to each group based on their needs. This personalized approach can work wonders for struggling learners.
Idea: Create skill-based stations where students rotate and work on different types of problems.
Resource to save time: Check out any one of my almost 30 test prep specific resources.

Quick Tip: Make It Fun
Add a little competition to your review sessions! Try a classroom game like Jeopardy-Style PowerPoint Games or use task cards for a scavenger hunt-style activity. Students learn better when they’re having fun.

Why All of This Matters
Mid-year assessments aren’t just about grades—they’re a chance to reflect on progress and identify growth areas for the rest of the year. With intentional review and a little creativity, you can turn this into a meaningful learning experience for your students.

Test prep doesn’t have to be stressful! By focusing on what matters most, using engaging activities, and staying organized, you can help your students tackle assessments with confidence.
