Halloween Middle School Math Project – Area, Perimeter, Fractions and Decimals

$5.00

Halloween math project for grades 5 to 8. Groups design a spooky house, draw a floor plan, calculate area and perimeter, and price the materials.

In this Halloween math project for middle school, the Spooky House Design Challenge, students work together as the Spooky House Design Company. They design a spooky house, create a floor plan, calculate area and perimeter, determine material costs and pitch their finished design.

It brings Halloween into math class and keeps the math practice. Students use math to make decisions throughout the entire design challenge.

What students do

  • Design a spooky house that meets specific requirements
  • Create a bird’s-eye-view floor plan
  • Determine room dimensions and calculate area and perimeter
  • Calculate costs for flooring, paint and decorations
  • Work collaboratively with assigned group roles
  • Create a final design and prepare a sales pitch
  • Explain and defend the choices they made

Two levels of difficulty

Use the version that works best for your students:

  • Version 1: whole-number dimensions
  • Version 2: includes fractional dimensions for an added challenge

That makes it easy to differentiate between classes, groups or individual students without needing an entirely different activity.

Print, editable and digital

One purchase gives you all three formats:

  • Ready-to-print PDF
  • Editable version
  • Digital Google Slides version

Use the traditional packet, create the tabbed booklet, assign the digital version, or mix and match depending on how your classroom works.

What’s included

The project walks students through the entire design process:

  • Area and perimeter warm-up
  • Spooky House Design Company challenge
  • Group roles and planning
  • House requirements
  • Floor plan and blueprint design
  • Area, perimeter and dimension calculations
  • Flooring, paint and decoration costs
  • Final house artwork/design
  • Sales pitch
  • Grading rubric
  • Two levels of math difficulty
  • Multiple completion formats

When to use it

This project works especially well when you want something seasonal that feels different from a worksheet and still gives students practice with area, perimeter, fractions, decimals, problem solving and mathematical application.

It fits 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade math, enrichment, collaborative learning, project-based learning, or those October days when students are ready for something a little different.

Quick facts

  • Grades: 5–8
  • CCSS: 6.G.A.1, 6.NS.A.1, 6.NS.B.3, 7.RP.A.3
