Stem and Leaf Mystery Detectives Activity – 4th Grade Math Activity

Students act as data detectives in this 4th grade lesson on stem-and-leaf plots. They generate their own numbers within a range the teacher defines, then work together to organize and display the data on a class-created stem-and-leaf plot.

How it works

Students predict, sort and interpret the data. They explore patterns, identify key features such as the smallest and largest numbers, and reflect on their findings.

The data comes from the students, and the plot is built as a class, so the lesson runs on discussion and teamwork. It builds critical thinking, observation, data analysis and collaboration skills, and it makes statistics approachable. It is flexible enough to fit any theme or number range.
