Remainders Solve and Sort Division Word Problems Activity for 4th Grade Math

$3.00

Division word problem sort for 4th grade. Students solve 12 problems and decide whether to drop, add or use each remainder. Worksheet and card sort.

In this Solve and Sort activity, 4th grade students solve division word problems with remainders and decide from the context whether to Drop It, Add It, or Use It. The point is for students to understand what to do with a remainder in a real-world situation.

It comes in two formats, a printable worksheet and a cut-and-sort version. Pick whichever fits your classroom.

What’s included

  • 12 real-world word problems involving division with remainders
  • Option 1: Printable worksheet version with space for equations, answers, and remainder interpretation
  • Option 2: Cut-and-sort cards with 3 labeled sorting mats (“Drop It,” “Add It,” “Use It”)
  • Student recording sheets
  • Full answer key
  • Teaching tips, extension ideas, and sentence frame supports

How to use it

Prep is low. The two formats cover different learning styles, and either one runs in math centers, small groups, or as independent work. It also holds up as classwork, review, test prep, or sub plans.

Sorting each problem makes students think critically about how the remainder applies in context. That builds conceptual understanding and supports math talk and reasoning.
