⭐️ Engaging middle school math project where students run a coffee shop while applying decimals, unit rate, and geometry in a real-world setting. ⭐️
Looking for a real-world middle school math project that actually gets students talking, thinking, and applying math?
In this collaborative project, students work together to create and run their own coffee shop using math to make decisions every step of the way.
✅ What Students Do
Students take on roles within their group and build a coffee & donut shop from the ground up.
They will:
- Create and name their own donut recipes
- Calculate ingredients for multiple batches
- Determine total costs and unit rates
- Figure out pricing to make a profit
- Design a menu, flyer, and shop display
By the end, they’re not just solving problems, they’re running a business.
✅ Math Skills Covered
- Decimal operations
- Fraction operations
- Area, circumference, and volume
- Unit rates and cost analysis
For example, students calculate ingredient costs and scale recipes across dozens of items, skills that feel much more meaningful in this setting than on a worksheet.
✅ What’s Included
Everything you need is included and organized for easy implementation:
- Student booklet
- Group booklet
- Recipe cards
- Warm-up activity
- Extension (unit rate)
- Teacher directions + group directions
You can run the entire project without creating anything additional.
✅ How It Works in the Classroom
- Students work in groups (recommended: 3 per group)
- Each student has a role (sales, baking, display)
- Work is a mix of independent + collaborative tasks
- Project builds toward a final “shop” setup and presentation
The structure keeps students accountable while still encouraging teamwork.
✅ When to Use This
This project fits easily into your math block when you want:
- An end-of-unit project
- A more engaging review with application
- A meaningful end-of-year activity
It’s especially effective when students are over worksheets but still need to use math.
❤️ Why Teachers Love It
- Students are engaged from start to finish
- Conversations are deeper (they have to justify decisions)
- Math feels relevant instead of repetitive
- Easy to prep and implement
