Preview this resource

A 6th grade math intervention unit on equations and inequalities, ready to use for skill gaps in independent and dependent variables, writing and solving equations, writing, solving and graphing inequalities, and two-variable relationships. It gives you a simple way to identify exactly where students are struggling, provide targeted instruction and practice, and monitor their progress.

It is meant for small-group math intervention, RTI/MTSS, remediation, tutoring or additional practice. Students work through varied practice, real-world situations and common mistakes to build a stronger understanding of each skill.

Skills covered

  • Independent and dependent variables
  • Writing equations
  • Solving equations
  • Writing inequalities
  • Solving one-step inequalities
  • Graphing one-variable inequalities
  • Two-variable relationships

What each skill includes

  • Skill review. Key concepts, guided practice and student self-assessment help you reteach the skill and quickly see where confusion remains.
  • Extra practice. Varied questions, real-world applications and reasoning for independent practice, partner work, small groups, tutoring or continued remediation.
  • Error analysis. Students identify, explain and correct common mistakes. You see the misconceptions behind student answers, as well as whether an answer is right or wrong.
  • Progress tracking. Record student performance by skill to monitor growth and determine next steps.

Pre and post assessments

A pre-assessment helps you identify specific skill gaps before you start, and a post-assessment measures student growth after intervention. Both print and Google Forms versions are included.

Intervention planning tools

Three small-group planning sheets help you organize:

  • Students who need intervention
  • Skills each student or group needs to target
  • Small-group instruction
  • Progress over time

The sheets are especially helpful when intervention is provided by multiple adults, including classroom teachers, interventionists, assistants, tutors or other support staff.

How to use it

You don’t have to use the unit from beginning to end. Start with the pre-assessment, identify the gaps, and assign only the skills each student needs. Each skill can be taught on its own, so you can differentiate without having every student complete the entire unit.

Use the pages for:

  • Small-group math intervention
  • RTI or MTSS support
  • Targeted reteaching
  • Math remediation
  • Tutoring
  • Independent or partner practice
  • Equations and inequalities review
  • Test preparation

Good to know

The unit is editable, so you can adjust the materials to better meet the needs of your students.
