I just got my associates degree in elementary education and I decided to change majors to business. I'm still not certain that I made the right choice even after hearing these things.

Thank you! I don't want to scare people out of education; yet, with so many teachers leaving the profession in the first five years, isn't the "real world" already doing that? I feel it's better to be honest up-front and let them know what they'll be dealing with. Every school is different. Every student is different. Every district is different. Every administrator is different. All this variety is what makes teaching a blessing, but it can also cause headaches. Thank you for an honest post! I'm pinning it to my "New Teachers" board right now! =)

I often had music ed majors observing me in my classroom. We had a university nearby and the music prof always sent his students to me. I was always honest with them about what teaching was really like. Sadly, most of them seemed to have never heard it before. Because of that experience, I worry that ed majors are not aware of the reality of teaching these days, but rather being shown an idealistic view that no longer exists or perhaps never did. I certainly don't want to tell students to avoid teaching, but I think it would be beneficial for them to understand that teaching is not like it is in the movies or on television 🙂

I told one of my high school students this last spring. Her parents got upset and went to the principal to complain. Principal wasn't upset thank goodness. I just wanted the girl to know it isn't all butterflies and rainbows.
