My year has not started off great and we are coming off fall break next week. How can I get my students to respect me like you said? I have a 137 students and I am struggling to get respect and build relationships with so many of them and so little time.

This is SPOT ON! I too teach middle school in a very rough urban area with similar statistics and student issues. I've taught middle school for 15 years, and "giving respect to get respect" is the secret to classroom success. I too "lay down the law" in terms of expectations, and stick to them throughout the year. I think the relationships that you build with your students, especially middle school students, are vital to the learning process in the classroom.

I can relate to your teaching experience and I love how you figured out how to overcome the challenges you were presented with in the end. My first year teaching was just like yours. Everyone told me I'd have it figured out by the end of the year -- I totally didn't though! I've only taught for 3yrs but every year I presented with new challenges
