I am in a similar situation now as it is my first year teaching and in a difficult community as well. My year has not started off great and we are coming off fall break next week. How can I get my students to respect me like you said? I have a 137 students and I am struggling to get respect and build relationships with so many of them and so little time.

This is SPOT ON! I too teach middle school in a very rough urban area with similar statistics and student issues. I've taught middle school for 15 years, and "giving respect to get respect" is the secret to classroom success. I too "lay down the law" in terms of expectations, and stick to them throughout the year. I think the relationships that you build with your students, especially middle school students, are vital to the learning process in the classroom.

I can relate to your teaching experience and I love how you figured out how to overcome the challenges you were presented with in the end. My first year teaching was just like yours.
