Interactive math notebooks have been a staple in my classroom for years. While I personally prefer composition notebooks, this exact system can be used with binders, spirals, folders, or pretty much any notebooking format. The organization matters far more than the type of notebook you choose.

One thing I think gets lost in a lot of interactive notebook discussions is the purpose of the notebook itself. My goal has never been to create Pinterest-worthy notebooks or scrapbook pages. My goal is to create a resource students will actually use. I always start with these templates.

I want students to have a place to find examples, vocabulary, formulas, graphic organizers, and reference materials before raising their hand and asking me for help. If a student can answer their own question by opening their notebook, then the notebook is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Student Cover Page

The first page of every notebook is a cover page. Is it necessary? Not really. Do students enjoy personalizing it and making it their own? Absolutely.

The cover gives students ownership from the very beginning. They color it, add their names, and create something that is uniquely theirs. Since they’re going to be using this notebook all year long, I don’t mind spending a little time helping them make it their own.

The State Reference Sheet

One of the first things we glue into our notebooks is our state math reference sheet. I print it on colored paper and have students glue it to the inside front cover. This is one of the most valuable pages in the entire notebook.

Students are allowed to use this reference sheet on classroom assessments throughout the year. My reasoning is pretty simple: if students are allowed to use it on the FAST assessment, why wouldn’t I allow them to use it in my classroom? I’d much rather teach students how to use reference materials effectively than pretend they’ll never have access to them. Learning where to find information is just as important as memorizing information.

Goals, Expectations, and Ownership

Next, students glue in our notebook expectations and class goals. This isn’t a list of rules as much as it is a conversation about responsibility. From day one, I make it very clear that the notebook belongs to them, not me.

That probably leads to my most unpopular interactive notebook opinion…

I Don’t Grade Interactive Notebooks

I know notebook checks are common. I know some teachers collect notebooks regularly and assign grades for organization, completeness, or neatness.

I don’t.

In my classroom, the notebook is a tool, not an assignment. Students know from the beginning that if they choose not to take notes, copy examples, or keep their notebook organized, they aren’t hurting me. They’re hurting themselves.

One of the easiest ways to teach students the value of their notes is through open-note quizzes. Students who have complete notes, examples, and reference materials quickly realize how helpful those resources can be. Students who don’t? They learn that lesson pretty quickly too.

I’d rather students maintain their notebooks because they understand the value than because they’re afraid of losing points.

The goal isn’t notebook compliance. The goal is independence.

A Color-Coded Table of Contents

Organization is everything when it comes to interactive notebooks. I use a color-coded table of contents with tabs printed on colored cardstock. Each major unit or timeframe receives its own color.

This makes classroom conversations incredibly simple. Instead of saying, “Turn to Unit 4,” I can say, “Look in your yellow section.”

Students find information faster. Transitions are smoother. And when students need to reference something months later, they can locate it quickly without flipping through an entire notebook. It’s one of the simplest things I do, but it makes a huge difference.

Guided Notes, Graphic Organizers, and Examples

The majority of our notebooks consist of guided notes, graphic organizers, vocabulary pages, reference sheets, fold and flip notes, and teacher examples. Occasionally students take notes by hand, but most content is glued into the notebook.

Another philosophy that surprises some teachers is that we do not complete independent practice inside our notebooks. Ever.

The notebook is reserved for teacher-provided content and correct examples only.

I want every page in that notebook to be something students can trust and reference later. When students open their notebook, they should find accurate information, complete examples, and organized notes. They shouldn’t have to sort through half-finished practice problems or incorrect work to find what they’re looking for.

Because of that, students are expected to copy my examples exactly. If I’m modeling a problem, I want them to have a correct version of that problem available later when they need it.

The Storage Pocket

Inside the back cover, they glue a small manila envelope.

It isn’t fancy, but it works. Students use the envelope to store puzzle pieces, foldables, task card pieces, and any materials they’re actively using. Instead of papers floating around desks, backpacks, and the classroom floor, students know exactly where to keep them.

It’s a simple solution that saves a surprising amount of frustration throughout the year.

The Password Page

The last page of the notebook is reserved for passwords.

Every year, without fail, students forget passwords.

Rather than answering the same question repeatedly, students know exactly where to look when they need login information. It’s one of those small organizational systems that saves a lot of time over the course of a school year.

My Favorite Organization Hack

I place a strip of painter’s tape along the binding of each composition notebook. Each class receives a different color.

Students can identify the correct notebook instantly, even from across the room. It’s inexpensive, easy to replace, and works better than most labeling systems I’ve tried.

Supplies I Use

My interactive notebook setup is intentionally simple. Some of the supplies I use every year include:

Composition notebooks

Glue sticks

Student scissors

Colored cardstock

Colored painter’s tape

You don’t need a huge classroom budget to make interactive notebooks successful. All of my favorites are linked HERE.

Final Thoughts

Interactive notebooks work because they give students ownership of their learning while also providing a reliable reference tool throughout the year.

The notebook isn’t for me. It’s for them.

If a student can answer their own question by finding an example, checking a vocabulary page, or referencing a formula in their notebook, then the system is working exactly as intended.

And in my classroom, that’s always been the goal.

Happy New Year! Can you believe it’s already 2025? It’s the perfect time to hit refresh and set some intentional goals—for yourself, your students, and your classroom.

As teachers, we’re all about growth, right? So, let’s dive into some practical ways to kick off the year strong while staying sane.

Reflect on Last Year

Before jumping into the “new,” let’s take a moment to reflect. What worked really well last year? Maybe it was a new classroom management strategy or an activity your students absolutely loved. Hold onto those wins!

Now, think about what didn’t quite hit the mark. Use those experiences as a springboard for growth.

Set Goals That Matter

This year, let’s set realistic goals that make a difference. Here are some of my tips to help:

Personal Goal: Maybe it’s about maintaining work-life balance or prioritizing self-care. (Psst… If you don’t already have a planner you love, check out the one I’ve been using. It’s been a game-changer for me!)

Professional Goal: Choose one area to focus on, like incorporating more tech in your lessons or building stronger relationships with students.

Classroom Goal: Think about routines or systems you want to refine—whether it’s streamlining morning procedures or finding a better way to track student progress.

Student Goals: It is so important to get students involved in the goal setting process. Here’s the perfect resource to help!

Make a Fresh Start in Your Classroom

Let’s be honest: nothing feels better than a clean, organized classroom in January.

Declutter that desk. (I know you’ve got a drawer full of Expo markers somewhere!)

Refresh bulletin boards or add a new inspirational poster. I just added this one to my new classroom and I look at it every single day and smile!

Keep It Simple

Don’t overcomplicate things. The start of a new year doesn’t mean you need to reinvent the wheel. Focus on small, meaningful changes that will have the biggest impact. Remember, consistency beats perfection every time.

Wrap-Up

Let’s make 2025 the best one yet—full of growth, meaningful connections, and those little wins that remind us why we love teaching.

What’s your one big goal for the year? I’d love to hear—drop it in the comments below or DM me on Instagram here.

Have an incredible rest of the school year!
Lindsay

Hey teachers! I’m excited to share some effective and engaging strategies for teaching decimal operations to your middle school math students. Decimal concepts can be tricky, but with the right approach, you can make them accessible and fun for your students.

The Decimal Point Anchor Method

One common challenge students face is aligning decimals correctly during operations like subtraction. They might align the numbers by their end digits, which can lead to errors. To combat this, I recommend using the “Decimal Point Anchor” method. In this approach, encourage students to view the decimal point as an anchor, stabilizing the numbers in the right place.

Before students begin subtracting, have them draw vertical lines to connect the decimal points across the numbers. This visual aid ensures that every digit is correctly placed in its corresponding place value column. Practice this technique in class by solving examples together and correcting intentionally misaligned problems. This method not only helps students understand decimal alignment but also builds their confidence in handling decimal operations.

Culinary Math Chef Challenge

To make multiplying decimals more engaging, introduce the “Culinary Math Chef” challenge. Turn your classroom into a cooking show where recipes typically serve four people. Challenge your students to adjust the recipes to serve different numbers, like 10 or 5, using decimal multiplication. This real-world application of decimals makes the lesson memorable and shows the practical use of math in everyday life.

After completing the challenge, have students explain their process as if they were on a cooking show. This reinforces their learning and helps them articulate their understanding of decimals.

Decimal Detectives Activity

Another hands-on activity is the “Decimal Detectives” activity. Place various items around the classroom, each tagged with a price that includes decimals. Assign each student a “case file” with a specific amount of money to spend. Their task is to choose items that collectively stay within their budget without going over. This activity teaches students to add and subtract decimals accurately and encourages them to apply these skills strategically.

Following the activity, hold a “detective debrief” where students can explain their choices and discuss how they used decimal operations to stay within their budget. This debrief is a great opportunity for peer learning and helps reinforce mathematical concepts in a fun, interactive way.

Avoiding Decimal Drudgery

It’s important to remember that engagement is key in learning. Relying solely on worksheets full of decimal problems can quickly disengage students. Here are consolidated and cohesive strategies for middle school math teachers to make these topics engaging and relevant to their students.

Ratios: The Harmony of Numbers

Math Recipe Challenge: Engage students with a practical application of ratios by having them adjust a family recipe to serve half or double its original amount. This task allows them to practice creating and simplifying ratios, seamlessly blending math with essential life skills.

Rhythm & Ratios: Leverage the universal appeal of music to explore ratios. Pick a song and work with your students to analyze the beats per minute, comparing different sections of the music. It’s an enjoyable approach that demonstrates the presence of ratios in art.

Ratio Art Project: Combine math and creativity by assigning art projects that require adherence to specific ratios, like using colors in a predetermined ratio or creating scale drawings. This method integrates mathematical precision with artistic expression, catering to visual learners.

Rates: The Speed of Life

Speedy Science: Make rates tangible by observing objects in motion. Calculate the speed of cars or have students race to understand rates firsthand. It’s a dynamic way to grasp the concept and appreciate its practicality.

Consumer Math Challenge: Connect rates to everyday life with a shopping challenge. Encourage students to compare unit prices at a store to find the best deals, applying mathematical concepts to real-world financial decisions.

Proportions: The Architects of Math

Map Math: Use treasure hunts or scale-based activities with maps to explore proportions. Calculating real distances using map scales turns abstract concepts into exciting explorations, blending geography with math.

Shadow Science: On sunny days, use shadows to experiment with proportions and similar triangles. Measuring the height of objects and their shadows can bring light to proportionality in a tangible way.

Design a Dream Room: Let students unleash their inner designers by planning a room layout on graph paper. Using proportions to ensure furniture fits offers a blend of geometry and interior design skills.

Applications of Ratios and Proportions

Scale Model Challenge: Foster students’ architectural curiosity by creating scale models of landmarks. This hands-on project emphasizes the use of proportions in design, encouraging spatial reasoning and artistic skills.

Budgeting Basics: Teach financial literacy early by using proportions for budgeting class events or personal savings goals.
Let’s dive deep into the world of 3D shapes by exploring the concepts of volume and surface area. As we navigate through these geometric principles, our goal is to transform what could be abstract notions into concrete, engaging learning experiences for middle school students.

Strategies for Teaching Volume and Surface Area

1. Container Challenge

A hands-on approach always sparks curiosity. Introduce the Container Challenge by bringing various containers into the classroom—think boxes, cylinders, and even objects with quirky shapes. Have students estimate and then find the volume and surface area of these containers. This exercise not only sharpens their mathematical skills but also shows them how different shapes utilize space in unique ways.

2. Model Building

Encourage creativity by having students build models using materials like play doh, clay, or cardboard. Whether they construct simple cubes or complex polyhedra, the act of measuring and calculating the volume and surface area of their creations blends creativity with geometry, making the learning process tangible and enjoyable.

3. Real-World Math Problems

Connect geometry with the real world by posing problems that require an understanding of volume and surface area. Questions like “How much paint is needed for this wall?” or “How much wrapping paper is required for this gift?” demonstrate the practical applications of these concepts, highlighting the relevance of geometry in everyday tasks.

4. Bake and Learn

If possible, incorporate baking into your lessons to teach precise volume measurements. Furthermore, decorating cakes or cookies can become a lesson in calculating surface area.

5. Tech Tools for 3D Exploration

Utilize apps and software that offer 3D modeling capabilities, allowing students to virtually manipulate shapes. This interactive approach offers a dynamic way to explore volume and surface area, enriching students’ understanding through visual and hands-on experiences.

6. Math Art Gallery

Celebrate student work by hosting a math art gallery. Invite students to display their models, accompanied by a card detailing the volume and surface area calculations. This not only allows students to take pride in their work but also fosters a learning community where students can learn from each other’s projects and approaches.

I’m excited to see how your students embrace these strategies to make learning about volume and surface area not just educational, but truly engaging and fun. By integrating these tips into your curriculum, you not only enhance your students’ understanding of geometric concepts but also ignite a passion for learning that extends beyond the classroom walls.

I’d love to hear from you! How have you brought volume and surface area to life in your classroom? What strategies have worked best for you and your students? Share your stories in the comments below, and let’s continue to make math an adventure worth exploring.

Today we are going to dive into the world of transformations. As we explore this dynamic concept, we discover that geometry is not confined to static figures on a page; instead, it encompasses movement, change, and the very essence of the space around us.

Transformations in geometry offer a unique opportunity to engage students in active learning. Here are some strategies to make the concept of transformations not only understandable but also enjoyable:

1. Transformation Stations

Create an interactive classroom environment with stations dedicated to each type of transformation: translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations. This hands-on approach encourages students to physically engage with the concepts, moving between stations and applying transformations to shapes. It’s a fun and active way to grasp geometric transformations.

2. Mapping the Moves

Incorporate elements of cartography and storytelling by having students map the journey of a shape undergoing various transformations. Utilizing graph paper or digital tools, students can visually document how a shape moves, changes direction, or resizes. This activity transforms abstract geometric concepts into clear, understandable paths.

3. Flipbook Animations

Merge mathematics with art by challenging students to create flipbook animations depicting a series of transformations. This creative exercise not only solidifies their understanding of geometric transformations but also enables them to express their artistic talents, making math a form of creative expression.

4. Geometry in Sports

Connect geometry to students’ interests by discussing how transformations are present in sports. From the arc of a basketball shot to the rotation of a soccer ball, transformations are everywhere in physical activities. This connection helps students see the relevance of geometry in their hobbies and daily lives.

5. Digital Transformation Tools

Embrace technology in geometry lessons by incorporating digital tools and software that simulate transformations. Interactive websites and apps offer students a platform to manipulate shapes and explore complex transformations with instant feedback, making learning both effective and engaging.

6. Transformation Design Challenge

Encourage students to apply their knowledge of transformations in a design challenge. Whether it’s creating a logo, a pattern, or an animation, this project-based approach fosters practical application of mathematical concepts, blending creativity with problem-solving skills.

Reflection and Discussion

Conclude the exploration of transformations with a reflection session, where students can share their experiences, challenges, and surprises from the day’s activities. This discussion not only reinforces their learning but also fosters a sense of community and shared discovery in the classroom.

As we wrap up this segment of Geometry Week, we celebrate the innovative ways transformations can be taught in the middle school math classroom. By making geometry interactive, relevant, and fun, we not only teach mathematical concepts but also inspire a lifelong appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the world around us.

I’d love to hear how you’ve introduced transformations in your classroom. Share your experiences, student projects, or any insights gained from incorporating these strategies.

Welcome to a pivotal day in Geometry Week, dedicated to demystifying the concepts of area and perimeter for middle school students. These fundamental concepts are more than mere topics in math; they are essential tools for understanding the world around us, from the layout of a sports field to the design of our living spaces.

Today, we’re diving into strategies to make area and perimeter not just understandable but genuinely exciting for students.

The key to making area and perimeter resonate with students lies in connecting these concepts to their interests and daily lives. Here are some engaging, hands-on activities to bring these mathematical concepts to life:

1. Classroom Layout Challenge

Challenge your students to become interior designers for a day by redesigning the classroom layout. Provide them with graph paper and let their creativity take the lead. They’ll need to find the area and perimeter to ensure every piece of furniture fits perfectly. This activity not only enhances their understanding of area and perimeter but also encourages them to apply math in practical, creative ways.

2. Outdoor Exploration

Who says math has to be confined to the classroom? Take your students outside to measure and find the perimeter of the school playground, a basketball court, or any available outdoor space. This exercise combines physical activity with mathematical thinking, showing students how geometry shapes the spaces they use and enjoy every day.

3. Real-Life Math Projects

Projects that require area and perimeter calculations can bring math to life. Whether it’s planning a garden, designing a skate park, or creating a layout for a miniature golf course, these projects allow students to see the real-world applications of the math they’re learning. They’re not just solving problems; they’re envisioning and creating solutions for tangible projects.

4. Virtual Room Makeover Apps

Incorporate technology into your geometry lessons by utilizing virtual room design apps. Students can engage in designing their dream bedrooms or an innovative classroom layout, applying their knowledge of area and perimeter in engaging, interactive scenarios. This tech-savvy approach caters to digital natives, making math both fun and relevant.

Reflection and Sharing

After a day full of creativity, problem-solving, and real-world application, invite students to reflect on their projects and discoveries. Encourage them to consider how mastering area and perimeter will aid them in making informed, creative decisions in various aspects of their lives.

I’m eager to hear how these strategies work in your classroom! Share your experiences, favorite activities, or standout student projects in the comments. Let’s continue transforming the teaching of geometry, making it as engaging, relevant, and enjoyable as possible for our students.

As we venture further into the fascinating world of geometry, today’s spotlight shines on the fundamental concepts of lines and angles. These basic elements of geometry are everywhere, from the meticulous designs of street maps to the complex builds in Minecraft. They are the building blocks that help us understand and interact with the world around us.

Turning Geometry into an Adventure

Geometry doesn’t have to be confined to textbooks and worksheets. Here are some engaging, hands-on strategies to bring lines and angles to life for your middle school students:

1. Become Geometry Detectives

Why not turn a geometry lesson into an adventure? Challenge your students to become “Geometry Detectives” for the day. Armed with clipboards and pencils, they can explore the classroom, school grounds, or even their homes to find and document various types of lines and angles. This mini-adventure not only makes learning active but also helps students see the practical application of geometry in their surroundings.

2. Blend Art with Math

Math and art are more interconnected than one might think. Encourage your students to express their creativity by creating artwork that emphasizes lines and angles. Whether it’s drafting modern geometric designs, creating comic strips that play with perspective, or assembling 3D models, this approach shows students that math can be both beautiful and creative.

3. Explore Outdoor Geometry

If circumstances allow, take the geometry lesson outdoors. The playground, sports fields, and even the school’s architecture are ripe with real-life examples of lines and angles. This not only gives students a break from the classroom setting but also allows them to apply mathematical concepts to the world around them, reinforcing their learning through practical experience.

4. Incorporate Storytelling

Who doesn’t love a good story? Craft story problems involving lines and angles but with intriguing plots—spy missions, treasure hunts, or mystery solving. This method engages students’ imaginations, making abstract concepts more memorable and enjoyable.

5. DIY Protractors

Involve students in making their own protractors. This hands-on activity not only teaches them about the tools used to measure angles but also gives them a sense of ownership over their learning. Plus, they end up with a cool math tool they’ve created themselves!

Sharing and Reflecting

I’m eager to hear how you bring the concepts of lines and angles to life in your classroom. Have you tried any of these strategies, or do you have unique activities of your own? Sharing your experiences can inspire fellow educators to think outside the box and make math a captivating journey for their students.

Geometry Week is all about exploring the wonder and practicality of geometry. By implementing these innovative strategies, we can transform how our students perceive and engage with math, turning geometry lessons into an adventure they look forward to.
