Welcome to the Calming the Chaos Blog Hop hosted by 2peasandadog. All of us bloggers have come together to share our top tips for making the last month of school run smoothly. Visit each of our blogs to learn something new and catch a freebie or two! Happy Hopping Hello May! For so many of us educators, no matter how much we adore our students, this time of year is SUPER exciting. The last day of school is on the horizon and we can envision lazy summer days. Ok, so maybe lazy summer days is the wrong way to put it. Most of us spend our summers in workshops, conferences, planning for the upcoming year, or working a second job. But still, there’s something about summer break that is just so exciting! And of course, you can guess who else is excited… your students! As hard as it is for us to remain focused towards the end of the year, it’s even harder for them. They’re looking forward to summer camps, vacations, days with friends and honestly, a break from us! The challenge this time of year is keeping students engaged. They’ve, for the most part, mentally checked out. The older they get, the further out the door they are mentally. Some days probably feel like nothing more than survival. The thing I’ve learned works best is keeping assignments and any work as relevant to real life as possible. I load the end of my school years with real life math projects and applications. I let them use computers to research and make sure everything I teach or review is tied to real life. Testing (for our state) is over, so it’s a great opportunity to teach for life skills, not just for test skills. Take the time to really help your students make those real world connections – they are invaluable to their success! Here’s a fun freebie for you! These Rock Star awards are the perfect way to let your students know they ROCK for whatever reason! Positive reinforcement is a great classroom tool – especially at the end of the year!
